A Short History of Klinefelter's Syndrome

Dr. Harry Klinefelter

Klinefelter's Syndrome was discovered by Dr. Harry Klinefelter and his coworkers in 1942. they discovered it when they were working inside the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. they examined 9 men with similar symptoms, for example sparse body and facial hair, enlarged breast, small testes, and inability to produce sperm. This is when Klinefelter's Syndrome was officially named and had the basic symptoms. Research for Klinefelter's Syndrome was far from over though because in the late 1950's researches figured out what causes Klinefelter's Syndrome. They figured out that it was a wrong chromosome arrangement resulting in an extra X chromosomes for males. In the 1970's researches wanted to see how common Klinefelter's Syndrome so they tested newborns chromosomes, one study tested over 40,000 newborns. this study's data showed that about 1 to 500 and 1 to 1,000 newborns have Klinefelter's Syndrome. The research of  Klinefelter's Syndrome still goes on today, such as learning more about what causes it.
